I’m usually not much of a radio listener – and even then, not much of an NPR listener. But this morning for whatever reason I’ve been listening to NPR all morning and heard a bunch of fun stuff, especially this segment on Weekend Edition where Linda Wertheimer interviews Barbara Kafka about vegetables. It was strangely captivating – this particular line stood out to me: “People are always saying, ‘But my children won’t eat vegetables.’ [pause] There is a temptation to say, ‘My dear, if you would learn how to cook…'”
I do love vegetables. Broccoli, Spinach, Brussel Sprouts are all favorites. Broccoli Rabe and Beets are at the very top of the list. I guess I’m big on B’s and down on P’s.

I cannot express how deeply gratifying it is to read that you love vegetables. We worked at it, your father and I, trying to instill an enthusiasm which would serve you well over your lifetime. It feels like a giant payoff. Thank you.

I made this fantastic beet salad for the party. It was absolutely amazing. I should send you the recipe. Or maybe I should just make it for you sometime! I love brussel sprouts too. I made them for Laura the other night, grilled, which is my favorite way. But the beet salad came from a recipe book, and it was just showstopping.
